Description

Strengths

St. Peter’s strengths reside in our people.  We are a congregation of friendly, caring and loving people who have a deep faith. Many individuals who have visited St. Peter’s while ”church shopping” or just visiting for a religious holiday have said that they have felt a warmth and welcoming feeling almost immediately and have become active and involved members of our congregation. We reach out to our community to help God’s children in need through our ministries of Friendly Kitchen, the Paper Pantry and our support of the Bourne and Wareham Substance Abuse Coalition, and contributing necessary items to those in a transitional housing village. We are able to work together harmoniously in caring for each other, our building, its grounds and welcoming to new people who visit our church or join as a new member.  We also have an amazing music Director, Piano/Organ player and choir and many other musicians that share the gift of God’s music, who enhance our worship and uplift us as only the music of the Lord can!

Challenges

Similar to many churches, we find it difficult to attract young families.  Currently we have no youth group or Sunday school population.  We do have a population of teens that had been involved in our Sunday school many years ago that were confirmed last spring and they were required to attend church with their families as they prepared for Confirmation. However, once confirmed they and their families stopped coming to church. We have 1-3 that still attend regularly. Likewise we have had several Baptisms but most families don’t return. It seems that parents/families want their children to receive the sacraments, but are not committed to practicing their faith. We need younger people and families to help us thrive and grow.

We also have a large aging population and have lost several members within the past year.  Given the fact that many of our parishioners are retired and live on a fixed income, we find ourselves in need of coming up with creative ways to bring more income into the church.

Comments

The strength and commitment of our congregation has been demonstrated through this transition period.  Our Interim and our Wardens have received much support and assistance in keeping St. Peter’s thriving from our members.
