Strengths

Who We Are -- We are a Spirit-filled community of simple grace and acceptance where all are embraced as children of a compassionate and loving, living, God. Nestled amid the historical surroundings of Monticello and the Jefferson Vineyards, we are a small yet dynamic congregation that has come together with commitment and dedication through use of their individual time and talents in volunteering their services, such as maintaining our historical structure, our gardens, outreach and fund-raising, and social and educational activities. Many parishioners are over 60 years of age, and some have been worshipping with us for over seventy years, while others have recently walked through our doors and are already establishing themselves as faithful members of our community. Consistently, those who have come to worship with us comment on our welcoming and friendly attitude. One long-time member of the St. Luke’s congregation says that he feels a sense of comfort at St. Luke’s, and in relationships with other parishioners, a peace of mind, and a closeness to others along with a deeper sense of his own beliefs. He says that St. Luke's, Simeon, is a perfect place for a priest to find warmth, comfort, and inviting relationships.

Challenges

What Are Our Expectations --We readily recognize that every Episcopal church in our Diocese has its own set of strengths, challenges, and needs that set it apart from the other churches. In our search for a new priest. St. Luke’s Simeon will seek someone who recognizes our uniqueness as a church parish, yet also recognizes our commonality by faith in our love for the Lord. The priest for our parish should be a person of prayer, committed to making each person in our church community “visible” and of importance to our whole community. As parishioners, we listen closely each week to the message of the Holy Scriptures, along with the priest’s sermons or homilies, with the understanding that what we hear, and especially the words of Jesus and His life, are meant to be an integral part of our daily lives. In turn, this helps us to become more compassionate and generous to our neighbors (“Love thy neighbor as thyself.”). Our priest needs to be someone who understands and is comfortable serving an aging and sometimes frail congregation. We believe that it is important for the priest to be able to lead that church population in its continued spiritual journey, keeping its members engaged and stimulated in the love of the Lord. Our priest should be a leader, a motivator, and able to effectively deal with conflict if it arises. Our priest should base sermons on Scripture and proclaim the Gospel, setting an example of Godliness to the parish. Above all, the ideal priest will show a love for the Lord in service to St. Luke’s and all Christ’s people.
