Liturgical style and practice
We are Broad Church, Rite II. We practice innovation within traditional liturgy. We welcome people of faith, no faith and those searching. We have two Eucharist services regularly on Sundays: an 8am, spoken service and 10 am service with music. Both services have clergy-given sermons; the 8am sermon has often had the quality of a discussion. Parishioners read the lessons. Congregants take communion around our circular dais, upon which the altar and lectern sit. We like the sense of community this fosters.
Music is very important to our services: our music director plays classical organ or piano music before and after the service. The choir (with professional section leaders) leads the congregation in the hymns and sings anthems. Sometimes gospel music is sung, led by the choir & music director; sometimes members play instruments as lead or accompaniment. There is also a 40-year tradition of member-led folk singing, with evolving leadership for over 40 years.
We have other services including: Blessing of the backpacks, Blessing of the animals, Blue Christmas, a participatory Messiah Sing, Carol Service, Lenten Invitation choral service and Zoom compline led by a parishioner.
Strengths
St Paul’s is described as vibrant and energetic by everyone who visits. There is an amazing music program, with a gifted director and talented singers. Clergy is thoughtful and lay leaders are capable. Youth programming is strong and taught by dedicated parish members and led by a new Director of Children, Youth, Family, and Young Adult Ministries. Church members are committed to having a caring community with individual connections and personal communication.
Challenges
Members are always looking for even more ways to connect with each other, for fun community as well as to discuss their spirituality and lean deeper into their faith. As with most churches, finances need to be continuously managed with a thoughtful eye to the future and who will be attending St Paul’s in the future.
