Description

Liturgical style and practice

As a joint ELCA-Episcopal Church congregation, Grace and Holy Spirit celebrates and honors both traditions. Worship is usually from either the Book of Common Prayer or Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

Strengths

Centrally located, downtown church with a number of outreach ministries to the community.  A well maintained physical plant, little to no deferred maintenance.  Opportunities for outreach to local SUNY-Cortland, a university with 9,000 students.  Committed and dedicated lay leaders.  As a joint congregation, strong connections with both the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York and Upstate Synod of the ELCA.

Challenges

Parish has experienced declines in membership and giving, and seeks to find new ways to reach out to the community and deepen engagement and growth.

Comments

Cortland is routinely ranked as one of the best mid-range towns to live in, has the feel of a college town but also located in close proximity to place like Syracuse and Ithaca.
