Strengths

Despite being a small town, Edenton has largely thrived in Northeastern North Carolina, where so many other small towns have seen their downtown's suffer and disappear. Edenton is blessed to have individuals that are committed to keeping its downtown alive and vibrant. Recent years have seen the opening of new restaurants and bars, and there is currently a plan in place to build a new public high school. While the population numbers haven’t changed much in the past 20 years, all other signs point to positive development in Edenton.

The town itself is sixty miles from the Atlantic Ocean and seventy-five miles south of Norfolk, Virginia, making the Outer Banks and Hampton Roads areas very accessible. Edenton is bordered by the Albemarle Sound to the south and, to the west, by the Chowan River. It enjoys a reputation as one of the prettiest small towns in the country. For more information about Edenton and its offerings, please review St. Paul’s Parish Profile report.

Challenges

Northeastern North Carolina is a rural area where agriculture remains a major industry. Our region has not been immune to the economic and health challenges of the last decade. We are fortunate to have active leaders and groups of community minded citizens working diligently to attract industry, jobs, and economic development to Edenton. As with many rural areas, attracting educated young professionals with lucrative opportunities and competitive salaries is a challenge. Young families often rely on multi-generational, long-established family businesses to afford them the opportunity to live here. Today's youth are often economically forced into choosing other locations due to the nature of employment opportunities in Edenton/Chowan County. Chowan County is also home to an underserved population, plagued by the hard-to-break cyclical paradigm of low-income households struggling to raise children in environments that lack motivation, education, and good role models. St. Paul's parishioners are active in the Boys & Girls Club, The Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, and Book Buddies, among other programs, aimed to serve this population.

Comments

The most important key qualities of a priest who partners in leadership with this worshiping community are: (1) That the rector be a spiritual guide and leader to the parishioners. It is indicated that the strong desire is for the priest to have a mature faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and a sound knowledge of the Bible and Creeds. (2) That the rector be appreciative of different theological perspectives but intellectually resonant with a moderate perspective. (3) That the rector be comfortable with caring for the members of the parish. The rector must be diligent in visiting new, old, active, and lapsed members of the parish, and he/she must be passionate in ministry to members experiencing a personal or family crisis. (4) That the rector has a desire to work with the youth of the parish
