Strengths
Strengths*: St. John’s is a joyful parish, grounded in our love of God and dedicated to living our faith in service to others. We love to pray and sing, and on Sunday’s we often find new ways to celebrate our faith. We enjoy a long partnership with our sister parish, Church of the Holy Spirit (CHS), Mattapan, MA. Together we have run service trips to Honduras, summer programs for urban youth, tutoring for school-age children and social and worship gatherings.
Our children are welcomed into all parts of parish life. They join in service projects with CHS and support Boston’s homeless community. St. John’s partners with Ecclesia Ministries to bring Boston to the suburbs for bowling and picnic events.
We believe that everyone is a child of God. We are actively involved in social and racial justice works. Parishioners completed the Sacred Ground series and discussed Spellers “The Church Cracked Open.”
Our finances are healthy and we can support a full-time Rector. We are blessed to have a Deacon and Priest Associate in our parish. Our churches’ recent solar expansion, the source of our only debt, allows us to reduce energy costs and share the benefits with CHS.
We have a committed and cooperative lay leadership ready to join in partnership with our new Rector.
Challenges
St. John’s faces many of the same challenges as other churches. While we have a strong youth program, we struggle to attract young families. The size of our parish membership is static. The parish responds well to the annual stewardship appeal, but giving is concentrated among our older members. Likewise, our Vestry and other lay positions are typically filled by long-time members.
