Description
Liturgical style and practice
BCP-based broad church. Highly anxious to keep politics out of the pulpit. Music includes a mix of traditional hymnody and praise music.
Strengths
Established, financially stable.
Located in the center of a tourist community on Keuka Lake. Surrounded by wineries and agri-tourist destinations, and within a 90 minute drive of world class arts and healthcare.
St. James has a great physical plant and recently invested in a comprehensive system for live-streaming. The parish knows they need to grow into their future missional calling, and actively want help with that.
They tend to love their clergy and take care of them well.
Challenges
The parish is politically divided and needs someone who can deftly handle the polarization while remaining self-differentiated.
They have a history of being conflict averse, instead opting for being "polite."
They have work to do around white privilege, especially as it relates to serving the less fortunate in the community.
HOWEVER--they recently did a Holy Cow! Consulting Congregational Assessment Survey and are serious about engaging the results and their suggested areas for further development. They know they need to change, and they seem open to moving where God is calling them.
Comments
This parish is a gem, for the right individual. A fair portion of the parishioners are retired, and those who still work are employed in a diverse variety of occupations from farming and the wine industry, tourism support businesses, schools, state and county positions to various occupations with larger employers such as Mercury Corporation and Corning Incorporated.
