St. Bart's is a vibrant, exciting parish located 20 minutes from Portland, Maine. Following their former Rector's call to a new ministry, the congregation engaged in serious discernment concerning their mission, and whether funding a full time priest helped them to carry out that mission. They looked at the wealth of gifts among the lay members of the congregation, the solid education and music staff, and the needs that the parish was originally created to help address, and decided to seek a half-time priest to help lead them into the future God has in mind.
While the congregation is enthusiastic about this new direction, its habits have all been formed in company with full time clergy. The process of getting used to a new way of doing things will certainly require some generosity of spirit from everyone involved.
There are many congregations which are finding they have to go from full time to part time clergy. St. Bart's is in a completely different spot: they decided that using all their resources to fund a full time priest was not consistent with their mission, and so they have chosen a less clergy-depended way of being, that leaves serious resources for other purposes. This will be an exciting, fulfilling ministry for a priest who wants to lead and to equip the saints for their own ministry, and who doesn't need or want to be involved in every activity or in charge of every decision.
