Description

Liturgical style and practice

The liturgy at St. Andrew’s is based upon the Book of Common Prayer, Rite II. The choir and Music Director, Sean Glennon provide music at all Sunday 9:30am services. The sequence is as follows; Opening Acclamation, Opening prayer, Children’s Homily, Collect of the Day, The Lessons (usually two readings), the Gospel, Sermon, The Creed, Prayers of the People, Confession of sin, The Peace, The Lord’s Prayer, Holy Communion, Post Communion Prayer, and Blessing. Although this is a traditional Episcopal Sacramental Liturgy, sacraments are most powerful when they are extended not simply to the religious and privileged, but to the poor, the marginalized, the lonely, and those left out. This is the inclusivity that so many young people are longing for in their churches.

Strengths

Our strengths and challenges are interconnected.  We have had several losses in leadership, a spousal death of our former pastor, followed by the death of our interim priest, plus a step down from the vestry due to over-engagement.  Our strength was shown in how the community pulled together, found ways to keep the parish up and running, and even thriving.  We need good leadership and recognize this, and at the same time, we are a highly committed congregation who lives in hope and has risen to the occasion while we search for our next Rector.

Challenges

One of the main challenges we face is reaching out to new members, and former members-we have lost quite a few during the pandemic.  We hope to find ways to engage more people in the faith community we call St. A’s. We also have some financial constraints, though this has improved in the past few years, Another challenge, although manageable, has been some building repair issues, maintenance, as well as our unpredictable heating system.
