Description

Liturgical style and practice

Holy Cross was founded as one of the Anglican Catholic parishes in the Diocese. As such we consider ourselves High Church, a place of ritual. We celebrate Holy Communion, Rite 2, every Sunday in both an English and a Spanish service. Each service has a choir/music accompaniment, with much singing and chanting involved. On High Holy Days we usually do a joint Eucharistic service alternating languages and using incense, held on the appropriate day.

Strengths

One of our biggest strengths is a belief in an active, socially-just, community-centered interpretation of the Gospels. This permeates our entire congregation regardless of the age, ethnicity, or social class of individual congregants; and it is the uniting factor that drives our desire to become a more integrated congregation. Our church is well-established and growing, and our physical plant has been completely updated and refurbished. We create a welcoming environment for new worshippers, and we are well-known in the community for our participation in outreach programs and social justice organizations. Our church is also beautiful, with terrific acoustics! Musicians love to perform here! The fact that we worship in two languages offers the potential for more growth than a single-language parish would have; and our social justice philosophy is attractive to young families.

Challenges

The challenge of being financially independent is our largest one. We have not had a full-time rector since 2008. For many years, the parish was completely supported by the diocese as a Congregation-in-a-Strategic-Setting; we had no full-time rector and no vestry. Due in part to the growth of our congregation, but mostly due to a generous bequest from one of our beloved congregants, we are now financially independent. However, we are still working on financial security. One of our greatest challenges is to communicate this need to our congregation, to increase pledging and involvement in our parish life. Other challenges include a lack of youth programs, and the fact that balancing two congregations can be difficult at times.
