Description

Strengths

Advent, Kennett Square is a faithful congregation with many

long-time members who are committed to the church.  Advent’s

parishioners are dedicated to worship, music, children and the

local community through multiple community partnerships.

As a result of strong clergy and vestry leadership, Advent

has a lay-created strategic growth plan, is in a stable financial

position, and a progressing outward giving program. Advent’s

excellent support staff includes a lay Director of

Children and Youth Ministries, music director,

communication administrator, financial administrator,

and sexton, all part-time.

The attractive church campus includes the church, fellowship hall

with a commercial grade kitchen, a nice 4-bedroom rectory,

beautiful memorial garden, and a large parking lot.  Advent has

good quality digital resources including new video cameras,

sound recording, and streaming equipment.  The air circulation

system, HEPA filters, and operable windows in the sanctuary

ensure quality air flow.

Advent is located in the charming small town of Kennett Square.

Kennett Square with the surrounding area of Chester County

is a nice community with very good schools, a growing population,

cultural attractions, and easy access to Philadelphia,

Baltimore, Lancaster, New York and Washington, D.C.

Challenges

Like so many churches, adverse demographics are resulting in

our core congregation growing older and youth congregation

growing leaner.  Attracting busy young families is a challenge.

Advent’s current demographic is largely white, college-educated

professionals.  Attracting more diverse parishioners is a

challenge.  The pandemic has negatively impacted the church

and there are concerns about Advent’s ability to rebound.

As a midsized church, competing against mega churches

in the region is a challenge.  Lay leadership “burn-out” is a

challenge also (20% of the people do 80% of the work).

Comments

We seek a spiritual leader who will help guide Advent to

find new ways to fulfill our mission—Making Christ Visible,

Changing Lives, Making a Difference-Together.  We seek an

interim priest in charge who will be a capacity builder – one who

will assist us as we rebound from the pandemic, work with us to

implement the existing strategic growth plan, and help us

address other challenges while we journey through the

call process.
