Traditional Rite II Eucharist with occasional Morning Prayer
Strengths
- Welcoming, giving, thoughtful, and caring congregation
- Family oriented membership (many current members have children who once attended Emmanuel but who have grown up and moved)
- Members past and present have always provided for the church financially
- Active and self-motivated core leadership
- Strong and committed lay liturgical leaders – LEM’s, lay readers, altar guild
- Long-term music program with active and committed organist
- Celebration of special occasions – monthly Cookie Sunday, Lenten suppers, summer picnic, special music programs
- Opportunities:
- Schools and programs in area from which to identify and draw new members
- Active church exposure to the community through strong Outreach program conducted by congregation members – community luncheons, Head Start and other local community development and assistance
- Encouraging new and existing members to serve on vestry and help with church functions
- Facility has been substantially updated over the last several years
- Church leadership interacts with the Diocese
Challenges
- Smaller congregation - need to identify and draw in new members from the community
- Older congregation - currently with small number of youth and children
- Little growth in church (although many prior members have returned as the pandemic has receded and now that we have returned from a 9:00 a.m. to the original 10:00 a.m. service)
- Priest-in-charge retired on January 31, 2023, and church is currently supported by a highly regarded retired minister actively and generously serving as supply clergy
Comments
Skills Sought from New Minister
- Part time position calling for a willingness to be somewhat flexible as to schedule, to be involved with the church in its various programs, and with an ability to work in a small town community
- Welcoming to people, interested in exploring ways of attracting new congregation members, and positively encouraging of congregation membership growth
- Accessible to members and responsive to member needs
- Willing to handle parishioner concerns and issues thoughtfully, graciously, and with skill
- Encouraging of continued strong Outreach Program within the community
- Providing sermons of meaning, substance, and relevance
- Knowledge of the Bible and willing to develop community through Christian Ed study
- Available for pastoral duties as needed, including hospital, home, and nursing home visitations, as well as performance of any baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
This is a half-time (20 hours per week) position that focuses on: preparing for and providing Holy Eucharist Rite II each Sunday with a sermon; pastoral care (hospital and nursing home visits); baptisms, weddings, and funerals; evening services on Ash Wednesday, Holy Week (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday), and Christmas Eve; and adult faith formation through an on-going book club and a desired Christian Ed study group held with members during the week. There will be a need to visit homebound church members (presently, one member lives at the Dogwood Village nursing home) and to make occasional hospital visits. The Vestry hopes to benefit from guidance on how to attract new members and re-engage children in the life of the church. The members hold several food and fellowship events during the year and look forward to the minister’s participation whenever available.
