Description
Liturgical style and practice
Traditionally the Diocese of Southern Ohio has been identified with 'low church' liturgical style, but today the vast majority of congregations would be more accurately referred to as 'broad' in their liturgical style.
Strengths
The Diocese of Southern Ohio is pleased to announce a new position recently created on the bishop’s staff. The Missioner for Black Ministries of the Diocese of Southern Ohio will work to connect historically Black congregations to each other and to resources for vitality of mission, to develop and support lay and ordained leadership, to assist in development of strategic planning processes, and to advocate for ministries and congregations that serve Black communities. As a member of the bishop’s staff based in Cincinnati, the Missioner will resource, equip, and support the four historically African-American congregations in the diocese, (St. Simon of Cyrene, Cincinnati; St. Andrew’s, Cincinnati; St. Margaret’s, Dayton; St. Philip’s, Columbus) and other key diocesan groups such as the Union of Black Episcopalians, the diocesan reparations taskforce, and the diocesan Becoming Beloved Community initiatives.
Challenges
Historically Black congregations in the diocese report feeling isolated and under resourced. Diocesan investment in HB congregations has been steady but not all stakeholders agree that investment has been appropriate in recent years. One challenge for the Missioner will be to assist in building consensus about what appropriate investment should be and create inroads and access to support.
