Description
Liturgical style and practice
The Church of the Ascension is deeply rooted in the rich traditions of Anglo-Catholicism. Our principal Sunday liturgy is the 11 a.m. Solemn High Mass which is celebrated east-facing toward the High Altar. Three sacred ministers (celebrant, deacon, and sub-deacon), crucifer, thurifer, and torchbearers create the ethos that some have described as timeless. The Minor Propers are sung in Latin from the Graduale Romanum and the Ordinary, a composed setting, is sung by the choir each Sunday from Michaelmas to the Feast of Corpus Christi. A professional Schola is provided during the summer months when the Choir is in recess. The earlier Sung Mass, at 9 a.m. with a sermon, hymns, a congregational mass setting, and the Minor Propers sung by the organist/cantor from the English Gradual, is offered at a free-standing altar. It is less formal, but no less reverent. Along with these, a said Mass is offered on Wednesday evenings and feast days. The service of Solemn Choral Evensong and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is offered on the first Sunday of each month during the choir season. The Choir, the Choirmaster and the Organist are professional musicians of the highest caliber.
Strengths
Located in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, the Church of the Ascension is grounded in Anglo-Catholic tradition offering both a Sung Mass and a Solemn High Mass on Sunday mornings. Wednesday evening Eucharists and monthly Evensong and Benediction from Michaelmas to Corpus Christi are also offered. The worship is supported by the excellent music program. The Daily Office is shared with parishioners far and wide by Zoom.
Challenges
The Church of the Ascension enjoys the benefits of endowments graciously provided by our forebears. The endowments are professionally managed and significantly support the operating budget. We have no debt. Our 55 pledges and open offering is projected to be $125,482 in 2022 which would contribute 10.4% to our projected operating income. The ongoing reliance on our financial endowments has tended to discourage pledging. We are looking for a rector to help us improve stewardship.
Comments
The Church of the Ascension is seeking a rector who will uphold the Anglo-Catholic traditions of the parish, who is a gifted preacher, spiritual leader and who will expand outreach.
