Christ and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Virginia is seeking to hire a full-time Curate/Assistant/Associate Rector to help lead this storied parish into the exciting next chapter of its life.

Christ and St. Luke’s traces the roots of its congregation back to 1637 and the original parish in the Elizabeth River settlement. The current church was built in 1909 and is one of the iconic buildings in the city of Norfolk, renowned for its architectural beauty. The parish has a long history of leadership in the community and is known for the excellence of its liturgy and music, programs, and ministries as well as its commitment to being open and affirming in its welcome of all people. With over 1500 members, a current average weekly attendance of over 275 in person and well over 100 online, it is one of the largest churches in the Diocese of Southern Virginia. Coming out of the pandemic the parish is regaining its full level of activity with great enthusiasm. The parish is also in the final months of a yearslong building renovation which has given new life to the church’s campus and facilities. Thanks to strong lay leadership and a faithful, committed congregation, the church is in position to move forward into a new season of promise and possibility.

We hope God is calling you to join us in that new season. This is a great opportunity for a priest that wants to contribute significantly in all areas of church leadership and would enjoy being a part of a parish that loves their Lord, their church, and their city. The priest who joins our staff will share fully in the priestly arts of liturgy, pastoral care, formation, and other parish leadership roles. Their responsibilities will include preaching and presiding, teaching groups large and small, performing the full range of pastoral offices, engaging in care for parishioners, welcoming newcomers, and expanding our outreach programs. It will also present opportunities for management and administrative experience and will offer the chance to help shape the vision for the future of this parish. This is a job for someone with a deep faith, joyful heart, and curious, creative mind. Someone who loves God, loves being a priest, loves the Church, and seeks to be an agent of the Holy Spirit in our midst. They must be invigorated by high expectations and enjoy the challenge of meeting high performance standards. The individual must be a superior preacher, excellent teacher and be comfortable presiding at large worship services. At the same time, they must love people, be a patient listener, clear communicator, well-organized, and enjoy being a part of a team.

Our ideal candidate is someone who has ordained leadership experience in the Episcopal Church, though newly ordained clergy with other forms of significant parish leadership experience will be considered. This position is full time and is designed for someone who wants to invest in our community and serve with us. Compensation and exact title will be based on experience and meet diocesan standards.
