Liturgical style and practice
Calvary is a traditional prayer book parish (1979 BCP), using Rite 2 at both Sunday services, supplemented by some of the newer trial liturgies. We alternate eucharistic prayers and prayers of the people throughout the year. The liturgical style is simple and inclusive, meeting the needs of parishioners coming from different worship traditions.
Our early service is without music for those who prefer quiet worship. The later service, considered the "family service", includes traditional hymns and some modern songs, with anthems provided regularly by our choir. Our children and young people are encouraged to participate as service assistants. Many of our members share the responsibility of chalice bearers and prayer leaders, as well as ushers and readers.
Our congregation likes to sing, supported by our energetic organist/choir director, who will occasionally rehearse the whole congregation when new music is offered.
Sermons have an important place in each service, generally no longer than 10-12 minutes.
Calvary Episcopal is a historic Church located in beautiful Flemington, New Jersey. Calvary has had deep focus on identifying our strengths as a church and what God wants for us as a church community going forward. After a Visioning Process and a Workshop with our Way of St Paul Team, we reaffirmed our commitment to our church by holding each other up in prayer during the week as well as on Sundays, and our primary mission of continued outreach to our community based on God’s call to us.
After a recent separation from our previous priest, Calvary has mindfully giving attention to healing and also a re-invigoration of our commitment to God’s mission for us. In line with honoring our current resources, it became apparent that we needed to change from a full-time priest to ¾ time. We will work together with the new clergy to develop a clear and fair model for the priest’s duties while focusing on our mission of worshipping together and growth through outreach to our community.
Calvary Episcopal Church’s Core Essence is …expressed through the Joy We Feel as a Parish Family, worshiping God and Jesus together with Music and the Book of Common Prayer, welcoming and supporting new members of our community in God’s name.
Calvary Episcopal Church’s Wishes and Dreams…are to continue to grow our congregation through confidence in our mission as a church in our larger community, with ever increasing faith and spiritual guidance of our Parish Leadership.
