Liturgical style and practice
Traditional broad church. Very BCP focused.
St. James' Church is located in the beautiful town of Hammondsport, at the southern end of Keuka Lake. The community is a mix of agricultural and tourism. St. James is located within 50 miles of Ithaca, Corning, and Watkins Glen, all of which offer rich educational, social, and cultural attractions. The parish will celebrate its bicentennial in 2029.
Service is at the heart of St. James'. The parish members work hard to stay in touch with each other and to be supportive of those in the community who are in need. During the pandemic, St. James' installed state-of-the-art cameras and audio in order to live stream with their snowbird members, shut-ins, and those who otherwise can not attend in person. They also adopted a family with significant medical needs, providing social and financial support over the last year.
The physical plant of St. James is in excellent condition. The parish is financially strong.
St. James finds itself in the middle of the current political debates surrounding masking, vaccinations, etc. Prior to the pandemic, the political leanings of the congregations tended towards the conservative, but the pandemic has brought out tensions that COVID precautions have amplified. St. James will need a leader who can stay self-differentiated in the midst of these tensions. They seek an able leader who will listen well and respond in an effective, pastoral, and consistent manner.
The parish recently completed the Holy Cow! Consulting Congregational Assessment Tool, and found that flexibility is their biggest opportunity and their biggest challenge.
This is a great parish for a spiritually-grounded, thoughtful and compassionate priest. They will need someone with a calm demeanor, a deep sense of Jesus, and deep commitment to community building. A strong sense of humor is a must.
