Strengths

We have experienced success and fulfillment in several recent ministries. For our SDG (Sustaining Development Goals, we have given more than our budgeted amount (through individual donations) to Buchanan Elementary School to cover delinquent school lunch vouchers, supply their Snack Closet, and provide socks and underwear to students in need. Our NoBo (North Botetourt) Community Garden provides a virtual bounty of fresh vegetables to Buchanan Food Pantry, Botetourt Food Pantry, Springwood Food Pantry and WIC. Our members individually and collectively participate in and support many community events such as Habitat for Humanity; BAMA golf tournament that supports local food pantries; Operation Easter Bunny; High School band shoe drive that sent shoes to Haiti, Texas and Florida; local high school After Prom party; Jackson Field home for girls; Boy’s Home; Town Special Events such as Mountain Magic and Civil War reenactments. We also provide outreach to the community by hosting Red Hat Society dinners, Pancake Supper at affordable prices, providing advent bags to shut-ins, and support Stop Hunger Now food packing event.

Challenges

We have gone through a lot of change in the last several years. We had a part-time priest that had been with us for 10 years resign and move to a larger parish. We finally had an interim priest assigned to us for 2 years. That priest has been gone for 1½ years and we have been using supply priests to serve us twice a month. We have been discouraged, not encouraged by the Diocese. However, everyone is engaged, invested, and eager to move forward. We cherish our Main Street presence in Buchanan. We learned to work together, to hold each other up, to care for and minister to each other. We are prayerfully hoping for more open dialogue as we move forward in the discernment process.
