St. Philip’s is a church of long and significant history which has greatly contributed to the development of Harlem. In the absence of a long term Rector, our greatest strength has been our ability to come together, survive and support each other in time of crisis to keep St. Philip’s an on-going operation. We have also continued to provide a forum for a host of activities, including Adult education, Ecclesia, the Harlem Community Justice Center, health fairs and Alcoholics Anonymous.
St. Philip’s challenges include finding new ways to be attractive and effective in addressing the current needs of the New York City metropolis through relevant programs which bring in new members. Our congregants have expressed a need and desire for spiritual growth so we need direction and support in developing our spiritual growth and ability to help and guide others. Further challenges include our ability to maintain and develop our physical structures and operational budget in this costly New York City environment.
