Strengths

St. Peter's is a small congregation in a large, beautiful, building in the heart of the the tourist area of Niagara Falls.  The congregation received a multi-million dollar bequest.  They have done needed repairs to their building and now wish to call a priest who will pastor the existing congregation while spending most of his or her time using the resources of the congregation to change the lives of the people in their neighborhood.

Their expectations for their new priest are:

  • High involvement in the community; live and breathe Niagara Falls
  • Experienced in entrepreneurial style community development
  • Culturally competent with working class and working poor people
  • Curate an environment friendly to families and children
  • Make the Word, church, and liturgy relevant and understandable to ordinary people

The congregation has members who are connected to the leadership & institutions of Niagara Falls and financial resources to help support community ministry.

Challenges

The existing congregation are faithful and good hearted.  There is a small Sunday School.  The congregation, however, does not have the human resources to be leaders or active participants in the community ministries that they want the priest to vision and bring to being.  It will be crucial for the priest to over communicate the community needs and the responses to them to the congregation and work hard at creating a sense of ownership of those ministries in the congregation, even if most of the people are not actively involved.

Comments

This is a really great job.  It is a five year priest-in-charge call with option to be called as rector.  The congregation is serious about wanting to change the lives of their neighbors and to empowering their priest to vision how to do that.

They are also serious about their expectations.  The incoming priest needs to be very comfortable both with working poor and working class people and sitting in meetings with the high level political leaders.  The priest needs to be committed to living in the heart of Niagara Falls and being an active part of the community.

Spend some time on their web-site.  It is a good reflection of them - http://www.stpetersniagarafalls.org/
