St. Michael’s has made a recent decision to step out and take a chance. They have been seeking a rector at the half-time level without success. They have a retired priest of this Diocese who has been a long-term interim (~3 years). The Diocese recently challenged them to look at their resources carefully and the Diocesan Compensation Guidelines to determine whether they could offer a full time package in the hopes of some redevelopment work. In a faithful response, the leaders voted unanimously to do so. They desired, however, to have the approval of the entire community and sought it at a parish-wide meeting; they received an overwhelming vote of acclamation (only 2 dissenters).
St. Michael’s is not large parish, but an active and committed one. They were at one time a large parish, but the community has changed. They do many effective ministries in and around the community. They are struggling to learn how to live in what has become a neighborhood that was once affluent and full of power brokers to one that is not. The step they are taking described above is, of course, a strength and a challenge.
St. Michael’s needs a creative and outward thinking who can help instruct how to encounter their changed and eclectic community and bring them into a welcoming and embracing place.
