St. Matthew's is in the city of Worcester, the second largest city in New England, which is experiencing a time of revitalization. It is located just across from Holy Cross College, a Jesuit University. There is a substantial Liberian population in Worcester and at St. Matthew's - both the current senior and junior warden are Liberian. The parish is racially diverse, which is seen as a strength. The previous rector served faithfully for 21 years, followed by an exceptional interim period. The parish is ready for the next chapter and not anxious. A recent capital campaign renovated the chapel and kitchen with the intent to be more open to the wider community.
It's an old building - beautiful in many was but more building than fits the current size of the congregation. That's not a unique challenge in New England but it is real and it creates some budgetary challenges related to upkeep.
