We believe our strengths emerge when we walk and work together in our faith and pray to do what God is calling us to do. Our use of our gifts to serve one another and the outward communities enable us go about “Our Father’s Work.”. Through our outreach programs and lay ministries, we provide refuge, food, peace and understanding, to a very diverse and troubled community. Our strengths are in our love of God and mankind, our gifts and our belief that God has a plan for his Church.
St. Mary’s Church has been challenged for the past 9 years with operating without a Priest in Charge. This has been our biggest challenge. We believe this, along with an aging congregation has led to a decline in parishioners and tithes. The population in Pleasantville has changed and there is a larger Hispanic/Latino and Haitian population than 9 years ago. We have participation in our outreach programs but with no Priest present and communication barriers are additional challenges to be met.
St. Mary’s Church has always been light in the community. There has always been a need for its presence but at no time has there been a greater need than the present. The community has changed and there is a need for us to meet the challenge and do so too. There is a diverse, young population in Pleasantville awaiting us, as disciples, to reach out as we are called to do. We are here to do God’s will and seek a Priest who is ready for that challenge too.
TMO note: The Bishop and Diocesan Office is in full support of St. Mary's intent to call a full time priest and have secured resources to fund the position for a minimum of a 3 year term.
