Strengths

Church of the Good Shepherd is located in north Buffalo, down the street from the Buffalo Zoo and Delware Park and across the street from a Frank Lloyd Wright house.  They are a congregation connected to the community around them.  They have a long standing history of inclusivity and welcome.  They have a long standing relationship with a neighborhood public school.

They have been sharing their building with a smaller Episcopal congregation for the last 2 1/2 years and the congregations have made the decision to move towards merger.

Challenges

The merger will present challenges of integrating two congregations into one and overcoming the us/them dynamic.  They are already beginning to address this.

The major challenge is the need to revitalize and revision after a long transition.  A focus on leadership development, stewardship and congregational growth will be necessary.

They will be doing 3 Sunday morning services - to accommodate the different worship styles of the two congregations.  This is important in the short term, but they will need to have a conversation about worship schedule as they live into the merger.

You can find their profile on their web-site episcopalgoodshepherd.org

The profile and their OTM profile provide a good picture of the congregation.
